Alternative Health Practices Growing Popularity

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Anne Woodland

Alternative health therapy is often used instead of conventional treatment. Integrated therapies use a combination of either alternative or complementary therapies with normal medical treatment, for the practice of which a high level of expertise is required. Alternative therapies make available services which are not offered in conventional medicine. Some of the alternative therapies include: herbal medicine, folk medicine, and homeopathy, diet fads, new age healing, faith healing, naturopathy, chiropractic, and music therapy even though this isn’t an exhaustive list. Alternative therapies very often promise cure or help in areas where conventional treatment might not wish to do so.

You can gain a sense of control over your health through alternative health therapies that improves general quality of life by making you feel better about yourself. Reducing and eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, causes the person to feel a sense of well-being and relaxation. Alternative health therapies can help you to reduce all of the symptoms that are associated with cancer, like feeling sick, pain, constipation, breathlessness, tiredness, diarrhea, and poor appetite along with moderating all of the side effects that are associated with the traditional treatment for cancer.

A combination of alternative health therapies and conventional medicine has been noticed to be very effective in alleviating pain, even when there is a serious condition. Some cancer support groups for example, offer these therapies for free or make a small charge and some hospitals and hospices provide as part of cancer care, alongside conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Many cancer patients currently use alternate therapy to manage and sustain themselves through the difficult cancer treatments. These therapies are very valuable in that they identify and support spiritual and emotional characteristics and physical features, but they should not be used as the only alternative line of treatment.

More than billion is spent by the Americans annually on vitamins and herbs which are alternative health products. The recent studies that were conducted by Phillips, Tindle, Eisenberg and Davis, reflected that there was roughly seventy two million adults within the United States that use alternative and complementary therapies. The studies conducted by Herman, Craig and Caspi in 2005 also show an out of pocket spend of about billion annually on these therapies.

It is very essential to find out which alternative treatment is required by your particular type of problem, how comfortable are you with it and how effective will it be. Individual therapies have been proven to improve the quality of life for many people with Motor Neuron Disease (MND), these can include: acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage, meditation, reiki and reflexology. It is always a good idea to consult your physician before considering any of the alternative therapies available, and it is important to double check that any additional treatment undertaken will not adversely affect any current treatment program you are on.

In the event, that you make the decision to integrate some of the alternative health therapies into your specific treatment plan, you are going to need to discuss all of your choices very openly, regularly and honestly with your physician and others that are part of your health care team. Find out where the treatment is available, at your clinic or hospital or then though the doctors own practice. Today doctors are more and more convinced that alternative therapy does have a place in the overall healing of a patient. This gives them the ability to maybe recommend alternative therapy practitioners. Most find that this type of therapy gives them back some control of their lives and lessens the anxiety and it also helps them cope with side effects of conventional treatment.

Kayak With a Friend in Tandem

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by K.L. Amadio

Kayaking is an adventure sport growing in popularity. Originally, the kayak was designed as a one-man boat. But now you can kayak with a buddy in tandem. Travel together through whitewater, blue seas or mirror glass lakes and discover secret waterways all from the same kayak.

Tandem kayaks are sometimes called doubles because two people can enjoy the experience together. These tandem kayaks are great for beginners, especially if you are a little nervous about being alone in water. Pair up with a buddy and share a wonderful kayak journey.

There aren’t any regulations about who can be in a tandem kayak. In fact, kayakers take children, parents, friends and even family pets in the tandem kayak. One of the interesting things about a double is that the second passenger doesn’t have to raise a finger if they don’t want to. Maybe your second passenger is too young, too old or just not physically capable of paddling. That’s alright because they can just sit and enjoy the ride.

Tandem kayaks are more wide that the one-man version which simply makes a double boat more stable allowing both passengers a safe day on the water.

For families, tandem kayaking is an excellent option. If the kids are very young, parents can keep them on their laps. Older kids can sit flanked by parents where they will be safe. This means the entire family can enjoy a day on the water safely.

Probably the biggest question while kayaking in tandem is “Who sits where?” Seating arrangements are important for a smooth and easy trek.

The weight and the size of the individuals in your party need to be taken into account when deciding who sits where. Try to keep the weights in each kayak equivalent which means including the weight of the paddles themselves. And keep in mind the the heaviest weight needs to be in the rear of the kayak and the most experienced paddler should take a rear seat as well.

Each pair of tandem boaters need to work together. If both partners are able to paddle, the tandem kayak will make great speed through the water. It’s important to unify your strokes to avoid clashing the paddles which results in slowing down the boat and is much less efficient.

Tandem kayak with a partner and work together for a great ride.

Benzyl Peroxide oxidizes radicals and kills bacteria which are responsible for acne. Hence Benzyl Peroxide is considered as the best among all the acne treatments that are available. Acne is one of the major causes for aging of the skin and so has to be effectively controlled the moment it is detected as an anti aging skin care regime. The skin can be kept healthy by doing regular exercises and taking all the required vitamins and supplements. Depending upon the exposure to sunlight the skin begins to develop wrinkles as we age. Facial expressions also contribute to aging of the skin as more expressive the face more the lines are formed.

An excellent anti aging skin care treatment would be to have your facial skin cleansed, toned and moisturized on a regular basis. This helps to exfoliate all the dead cells of the skin. A good anti aging skin care treatment would be to apply a chemical peel once a month under the expert supervision of a skin care specialist. Lots of beauty sleep, the right amount of exercise, and proper nutrition would go a long way in providing excellent anti aging treatment by helping to keep your skin smooth and shining.

Why am I sweating so Much?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Victor Lorentzo

One question that many are struggling with is: Why am I sweating so much? There are millions of Americans and others suffering from excessive sweating. What is the reason for this and what can we do about it?

It is estimated that between eight or ten million Americans suffer from excessive sweating. The problem is also a growing concern and more and more people start to see how bad it can influence their lives.

There are several reasons for why the sweat problem is growing. One is the lack of research in the area. Excessive sweating is not looked at as a serious problem enough to do research on.

The modern American lifestyle consists of a lot of bad food combined with a growing lack of activity and recreation. This is one of the most important reasons why the number of excessive sweaters is growing.

A different important modern problem is all the different cosmetic products we use. Soaps, deodorants, shampoo, body lotion. Many of these contain toxins and bacteria that irritate the skin. One of the most important jobs of our sweat glands is to help control our bacteria level.

So to decrease the excessive sweating and make it back to normal we need to focus on what we eat and to exercise on a regular basis. More important we need to investigate some time into understanding how we can help keep our bodies free from toxins and bacteria caused by beauty products. If we are able to do this right we are on a good path towards a sweat free living.

Getting past excessive sweating is a gift. You will start to become more social and start to seek settings where before you were afraid that somebody will be noticing you’re sweating. All the sweat worries will be gone and you will be able to get more out of life.

Herbal Remedies for Acne

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Richard May

In most cases where a person has begun to suffer from acne it is because the sebaceous glands (found at the end of their hair follicles) are producing too much oil. These increased oil levels in the skin can then cause the pores to become blocked and infected and so they start to notice spots forming. Most people will often seek out their doctor’s advice on how to treat the problem and they will generally prescribe some form of anti-biotic medication. However, there are others who would prefer to use more natural and safe ways of treating their condition and luckily for them there are plenty of different herbal remedies for acne that they can select from.

Below we take a look at a few of the different herbal remedies a person may want to consider trying in order to treat their acne. However it is important that before they do they actually discuss their plans with their doctor first.

1. Aloe Vera - This is one of the most effective herbs for treating acne available today. This particular plant contains both astringent and anti-bacterial properties that can help to fight the bacteria, which is causing the acne. Also it also contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce the swelling (spots).

2. Calendula - Although not as popular as Aloe Vera or other herbal remedies for acne this is still an effective one. Not only does it help with healing damaged skin tissue but it contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as well. Many people will apply this herb directly to the skin when it has been made into a cream or when it has been infused with water and then they wash their skin with it.

3. Lavender - This like the herbs previously mentioned also contains anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that can help to combat the affects that the acne bacteria is having on the person’s skin. In order for this remedy to be effective it is best if the essential oil is mixed with water or carrier fluid and then applied directly to the area of skin that is affected.

4. Tea Tree Oil - Of all the different types of herbal remedies available for treating acne this is one of the most popular. The main reason for this is that the herb contains good antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Again just like the lavender in order for this remedy to be effective it needs to be mixed with water or carrier fluid and then applied directly to the acne.

But as well as these herbal remedies there are plenty of other ones which are both safe and effective to use in treating this skin condition and which you may want to consider trying. One such herb is walnut leaf which has very good astringent properties and is normally mixed with a carrier fluid or water and then used as a skin wash. Otherwise you may want to consider trying witch hazel, which has both astringent and anti-bacterial properties like many of the others.

What is important to remember however is that these herbal remedies for acne help to treat the condition from outside. You therefore also need to look at what is actually causing the increased production of the oil (sebum) in the first place. Generally dietary and lifestyle habits can be a reason for a person who is suffering from this skin condition. So making changes to both their diet and lifestyle can further help to improve the problem.

Removing Stretch Marks By Surgery: All You Need To Know About It

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Rashel Dan

Striae, or what is most commonly know as stretch mark to most people, are some of the most annoying condition of the skin. This usually occurs when the body grows quickly, such as the case with gaining weight. The stretch marks are formed when the dermis cannot catch up or deal with the stretching, meaning its elasticity is not flexible enough to cope with the stretching. The dermis tears and wherever the skin has reddened is the area most likely that stretch marks will occur. If not prevented earlier, one has to the option of removing stretch marks by surgery.

Going Under The Laser

Right now, one of the only medical procedures that do not involve you taking any prescription medicines is to go through laser surgery. This is similar to the laser surgery that is used to remove tattoos. It works by “cleaning and repairing” the dermis which is a layer just underneath your skin and where all the stretch marks form.

Quick and Painless - Laser treatment has become a very popular and painless way to get rid of stretch marks especially for women who have just had kids. Of course, this is a procedure that is not advisable for women who are still pregnant.

Why Use Laser Treatment?

Since laser surgery is a relatively new method for treatment, a lot of people might be skeptical of the procedure. But this surgery process is very safe and it is also quick.

The Treatment - A full procedure will only involve a few sittings on the patient’s part. Also, this is a very cost-effective way to get rid of stretch marks. The best thing about it is that removing stretch marks by surgery involving a laser means getting rid of them forever. You will not have to worry about any side effects as there are none.

It’s Really Inexpensive?

The Price - The laser surgery procedure is certainly not cheap but it is a lot cheaper than it used to be a few years back. Also, you can count on the fact that there have been major improvements to the procedure since then. The price you pay will depend on the extent of surgery that you want or need. So the more stretch marks you have, the more chances that you will have more than just a couple of sittings to go through the process completely.

Is It Safe?

Laser surgery done by the right person is 100% safe. You cannot do this procedure on yourself unless you too are a professional. But the specialists who can operate the machines and have medical degrees can assure you absolute success and zero side effects. There are many unregistered clinics who also offer this treatment and sometimes for a lower price but you cannot trust those places if they do no have the license to operate.
