Aids for snoring

July 29th, 2008
by Ray James

The noise produced due to the vibration of the uvula and soft palate, which are present at the back of the throat is called snoring. Snoring is a very common problem affecting both men and women of all ages. Snoring gets worse with the advancing age: up to 50% of the men and 30% of the women over the age of 60 are affected by snoring. Snoring affects people with advancing age. Snorers are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea, which stops breathing for a short time while sleeping. This causes a greater risk of high blood pressure and heart diseases. Snorers usually suffer from the problem of daytime sleepiness. There are numerous varieties of treatment which will help you stop snoring. Some of them are listed below:

Sometimes if snoring is serious, there is often the need to see a doctor, hopefully a sleep specialist or an Ear Nose Throat specialist. But surgery isn’t necessarily the only option, depending on what is the problem

This is the most popularly-recommended treatment by doctors for your snoring problem. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a device which pumps the air by applying pressure to keep your throat open, using a mask worn over your face or nose. This device is mainly used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. This is the most effective method to cure snoring. The drawbacks are that it’s the most expensive and uncomfortable snoring aid.

If the problem is serious and structural, there may need to be surgery. In sinus surgery, the air chambers present on either side of nose and between eyes, called sinuses, are removed. There are our pairs of these chambers called frontal, maxillary, sphenoid and ethnocide. Any blockage of the drainage system of the sinuses such as that with allergies or colds can causes infection. The procedure is not painful. The patient is anesthetized and the nose is examined with an operating telescope. Micro instruments are used in the whole surgery to remove and any areas of the blockage. Serious complications will rarely occur in this surgery. Bleeding is the most serious potential consequence.

If you snore while sleeping on your back than you should try sleeping on your side. Sleeping on your back tends to make your snoring worse, as it makes your airway narrow by making your tongue to slide backwards. Sleeping on your side will help you solve the problem of snoring.

Sinus surgery

Sinuses are the air chambers present on both sides of nose and between your eyes. Mucus which helps to keep your throat and nose moist and healthy gets infected if the drainage channels of the sinuses get blocked from a cold or allergies. It can be treated by antibiotics and with nose drops. If these measures fail to cure the problem, an operation may be required.

This is not generally a painful operation. The person is given an anesthesia and the nose is examined using an operating telescope. Using micro instruments, the areas of blockage and the polyps are removed. Possible complications are bruising around the eye, infection, CSF leak and bleeding.

A jaw positioning device designed by a dentist pulls your tongue further away from sliding backwards to the back of the throat. It is like a splint worn at night to hold your lower jaw forward and keep tissues from blocking your airway. Jaw positioning devices vary in price. There are various types of splints available. For some people the splint is not that comfortable, and in those cases a custom fitted is usually recommended. The splint is used by the people to loose their weight.

Jaw positioning

Obesity leads to fatty tissues in the neck, causing breathing airways to narrow, leading to vibration of the soft tissue or snoring. Loosing weight will help to reduce those fatty tissue of the neck.

Overcoming Procrastinating With a Little Help From Your Goals

July 29th, 2008
by Christopher Stigson

It’s human nature to want to do things at a later time. Humans have virtually perfected the art of procrastination and now more than ever people need immediate help with it. Why else would there be a whole library full or overcoming procrastination books and tapes? With all of the books and ebooks coming out on a monthly basis you can easily fill up a whole persons shelf with just those.

The best and simplest way to end procrastination today is having a good reason why you want to end it. There has to be a reward or an equal or greater loss. You may soon discover that having a good goal will definitely help when you want to end procrastination becasuse it allows you to have something to move towards.

And does a person set about creating or defining a well defined goal? This can be accomplished once they are clear about the whole process. By simply knowing what you are doing you’ll immediately increase the chances of having strong feelings of commitment which is what you need in order to motivate yourself and keep up with the goal.

Figuring out what a person really wants often begins with figuring out what they do not want. Most people who ask themselves the question “What do I really want?” can only answer it with things they do not want, thus creating a negative association with want. That is why the answers to the “What I want” question can usually be derived by flipping the answers around when the negatives surface.

There are also software that allows you to ask a question to it and it gives you back answers which shows you basically what you want in life and it’s aimed at getting these questions answered.

Among the various other tools and techniques for time management and especially for stopping procrastination, goal setting is an important part of the whole. You need to have a great education on how to set goals effectively and should be the most important part of your self-education.

Overcoming Vicodin Addiction Problems

July 29th, 2008
by David B Smith

A surprising number of people have found themselves fighting with problems of dependence to the prescription drug Vicodin.

Prescribed as a pain reliever, Vicodin is one of the most commonly misused prescription drugs because patients do not take it correctly as the medical practitioner intends it to be taken.

When used according to doctor’s orders, it can be a very helpful analgesic to help alleviate pain, but prolonged use of Vicodin can lead to addiction because the body builds up a tolerance to the drug, needing more and more in order to provide the same outcome. It takes over the conscious mind’s regular pleasure and motivational systems making the need for the drug takes priority.

Vicodin yields a euphoric sensation, calming both the body and the mind. People with an dependence to Vicodin are often in denial that they have a problem. They excuse their use by saying things like “I’m only needing it for the pain” or “The GP said I could take a few extra tablets if I needed to”.

As with other drugs, there are loads of Vicodin users who don’t get hooked on the drug, but true addicts will give themselves away by getting frantic when their reserve begins becoming low. They will hastily look for ways to refill their supply, such as by telling untruths about physical problems in order to get a prescription.

Vicodin abusers feel that they can’t function without the drug. Even though the pain has eased, Vicodin provides an result in them that they feel they cannot live without.

People wrestling with Vicodin addiction eventually find themselves going to outside suppliers such as drug dealers to obtain the drugs and will often go to great lengths to keep up their supply.

Addiction to the drug Vicodin is often seen as less serious than dependence to illegal street drugs because it is prescribed by a doctor. Also, because Vicodin is not seen as resulting in the same life-changing problems as other drugs, people who are addicted to Vicodin often don’t feel they need to seek help for their dependence problem. However, the long-term consequences of the drug on a persons life and fitness can be harmful, and it is totally possible for an user to die from a Vicodin overdose!

Overcoming Vicodin dependence can be tough. The detoxification route can be harrowing, and Vicodin abusers need to go through the same sort of counselling and lifestyle reformation therapies as do other drug addicted persons.

Freedom from Vicodin certainly is possible though. The first step for a Vicodin addict is admitting that there is a dependence problem and seeking help.

Your Can Have Your Own Gym, In Your Own Home

July 29th, 2008
by Ricardo Daryans

Some people have asked me if the only way to have a strong, muscular body is to spend a lot of hours working out in the gym. Well, yes…and no. Yes, you’ll have to work out for hours if you want to have huge muscles, they will not magically pop up. But no, you don’t have to spend that time exactly in the gym. You can do it in your own home and achieve the same (or even better) results.

There may be a lot of factors that make you decide not to go to a gym. Maybe you can’t afford the membership, or you don’t like the ones close to your home. Or you don’t like the guys in that gym. Whatever your reason, it’s ok, there’s still chances for you.

I currently workout at a gym with my training partner but have to say that my years spent lifting at home were fantastic. I didn’t have to worry about the travel time to and from the gym. I could simply slip downstairs whenever I felt like it and all of my equipment was there waiting for me.

I could listen to whatever music I wanted to, as loud as I wanted to without having to worry about those around me. I could grunt, yelp and scream through my sets if I was in the mood without disturbing anyone (hey, squatting to failure isn’t easy okay?) or train shirtless if I felt like it.

When the workout was over, I could sprawl out on the floor in exhaustion and know that my post workout shakes were just a few steps away, and that I wouldn’t have to hobble to my car and spend anymore time driving home. It was great.

The only real disadvantage is that your exercise selection will decrease because you won’t have access to certain pieces of machinery such as a leg press or calf machine. You can purchase certain machines if you have the money to spend and plan on training at home over the long term, but for the majority of people this simply won’t be possible.

Even so, that’s no bad at all. Ok, that machinery makes your workout easier, but if you don’t have that equipment there are still forms to perform similar routines (freeweight substitutions). A proper bodybuilding routine does not require the use of any fancy equipment.

Here is the basic equipment that your home gym should contain: 1) An adjustable barbell with freeweight plates. 2) Adjustable dumbbells. 3) A bench with incline adjustments. 4) A chin-up bar. 5) A squat rack.

If you can’t afford a squat rack then you’ll have to be creative. The bottom line is that you must have some sort of apparatus that will allow you to safely unrack a loaded bar and drop the bar onto a safety catch (or the floor) if your strength gives out during the lift.

What You Can Do About Your Stretch Marks

July 29th, 2008
by Maia Pells

Rapid skin expansion results to stretch marks. However, the real culprit for causing stretch marks is the hormones called glucocorticoids. These are secreted by the adrenal glands, which lies on top of the kidneys and the production of this hormone is increased during pregnancy, adolescence, with obesity, weight lifting and Cushing’s disease.

Getting to the Cause - Cushing’s disease is said to be a result of a tumor in the adrenal gland which causes the gland to excessively produce cortisol, which will cause the person to gain weight and another symptom of this disease is the thinning of the skin. When you look at stretch marks under the microscope, you will see that the layer of the skin called the dermis is thinner than normal. That is why if someone is suffering from Cushing’s disease, the person will also develop stretch marks on the skin. There are actually two types of scars. The newer formed marks are red or purplish in color, while the more matured ones are commonly silver or white stretch marks.

Early Signs - In the early life of a stretch mark, it is often protruding and still reddish. If you have dark skin, you will not clearly see these marks but they are there. Then they turn purplish or bluish after a while and overtime they become flattened white stretch marks streaks because they already have aged. These unsightly marks will not occur if the dermis is strong.

Torn Tissues - The skin tissues will start to break only if collagen and elastin fibers are prevented from forming. If this happens, the dermis no longer has support and will consequently tear once it reaches its breaking limit. Stretch marks are usually seen on the different areas of the body like the buttocks, hips, breasts, abdomen, and thighs. In addition to tearing, the thinning and flattening of the dermis will also make these marks more visible on the skin.

Treatments - Most people know what stretch marks look like but many are not familiar with the variety of treatments that can cure them. There are actually different methods to cure each specific phase of the scar. Laser light treatments are effective in removing newly formed scars. This method works by applying a controlled amount of laser beam on the affected are. This beam will break down scar tissues and once these tissues are gone, healthier skin cells and collagen start to develop in the vacated area.

Cream Options - Some topical creams can also remove stretch marks but if it is stubborn and aged marks that you want to get rid of, you will need a more potent solution for this. There is one cream available in the market that works and penetrates into the middle layer of the skin and its natural ingredients work together to heal the torn tissues and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

Microdermabrasion - Microdermabrasion can also help remove stubborn and white stretch marks. This procedure uses tiny particles to sand the skin and slowly remove the scarred or discolored tissue. But the stretch marks will not be removed in just one sitting. You will need to go back for more sessions and the number of times will depend on the severity of your scars. However, the best cure for stretch marks is still prevention.

Stop Drinking Alcohol - Taking that First Step

July 29th, 2008
by David Peters

One of the most notorious villains which is deeply embedded in today’s society, Alcoholism is now recognized as not only a physical dependency, but also a psychological disorder which affects not only the alcoholic as a person, but also negatively impacts his social and interpersonal relationships. Alcohol enjoys a long history of being associated with celebrations, some of which it forms an integral part. Also, many individuals see no harm in simply pouring themselves out a measure or two of their finest scotch to relax and unwind after a long day. But it is when these situations begin to crop up with an uncanny regularity, or when you find yourself making excuses to explain your drinking habit that you need to pay heed. For these are the telltale signs of your occasional habit, transforming itself into an addiction.

The most widely known and accepted definition of alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcohol even after it impedes your social and personal interactions and causes a significant number of health issues. Simply put, if your friends and family have been talking about your drinking habit a lot more than they used to, or if you have been putting off that visit to the doctor, only because you don’t want him to launch into a minute speculation about your drinking routine, you are well on your way to alcohol addiction.

The most worrying of all symptoms of alcoholism is that the victim is more often than not, in the state of denial. This means that he is nor only defensive about his habit, but resentful about others commenting on it, simply because he himself is trying hard to convince himself that there’s nothing wrong about how much he drinks, or worse, he just doesn’t find anything abnormal about it. Also, many alcoholics are deceptively natural in their appearance and interactions, thus alleviating any cause of worry about just how dependant on alcohol they are until they’re overcome by their addiction.

There are several factors which determine how susceptible you are to addiction. Although many of these causes are rooted in your psychological patterns of behavior, it could also depend on how genetically pre-disposed you are to teetering on the verge of alcohol abuse. Hence, if you have had several instances of alcoholics up your family tree then chances are that you’re pretty close to becoming one yourself. Also, if you tend to restart to numbing yourself with a round of drinks when the stress is simply too high, or have been experiencing an emotional slump, then you are more likely to fall prey to alcoholism.

The consequences of alcohol abuse begin right when you down that first snifter. Your liver it is worst hit as alcohol steadily leads to inflammation, which soon develops into jaundice, if you keep up with the intake and ultimately Liver Cirrhosis. Here, the tissue is scarred forever, a change which cannot be reversed. Alcohol addiction also causes severe malnutrition on account of the impairment in the absorption of number essential nutrients it is responsible for. The habit of heavy drinking in women is also known to cause several pre-natal birth defects during pregnancy, an irregular menstrual cycle or even Amenorrhea. Alcohol addiction is also wont to cause several behavioral disorders which can start with marital discord and eventually even criminal and antisocial behaviors.

The best way to deal with a reliance on alcohol is to come out in the open about your dependence. This could be either through consulting your physician to have him recommend the necessary treatment, and being honest with him about your consumption patterns. You will either be asked to cut down on your drinking or abstain completely, depending on how severely affected you are. If your counselor finds that your dependence on alcohol is rooted in other psychological problems like chronic depression, marital discord or work-related stress, you will be advised to undergo counseling for the same, in addition to your detoxification treatment. You may even be prescribed medication to help curtail your withdrawal symptoms and recommended group therapy, to help you deal with the process of de-addiction. However, the key factor which influences how effective your treatment will be your determination and resolve to stick to your decision. This may also warrant that you keep away from any social gatherings and people where you may find yourself being coerced or even tempted to relax your rules for ‘one tiny drink’. Once you’ve taken that first step, it is crucial that you stick to it at all costs. And when you begin to find other ways to deal with stress and involve yourself in more rejuvenating recreational activities, you’ll find that there’s no high you get from alcohol, that life itself can’t give you. Your first step is just the beginning down a long and healthy walk through life and once you’re down that path, you’ll find a world of opportunities open up to you with every step that you take!

Benefits of Vitamin E For Women’s Health

July 29th, 2008
by Alison Addy

This article is about the many benefits of Vitamin E and where we can get this vitamin from.

Vitamin E Should Not Be Forgotten

We need vitamins and minerals in order for us to stay strong and healthy. There are essential for a strong mind and body as well as for our overall well-being whether we are young and still growing or are adults. We’ve been reminded all our lives about the importance of vitamins. Each of them has a benefit, although we tend to overlook some of them. Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble vitamin that should not be overlooked. Of the different forms of Vitamin E, the most active form is alpha tocopherol.

Many Benefits of Vitamin E

Vitamin E has many important benefits, one of them being its role as an antioxidant. It is used as a neutralizer of the free radicals in our body that may damage or destroy our tissues and cells. Without this in our body, we are very susceptible to illnesses and disease. The work that Vitamin E does in making our circulatory system work better is invaluable. It helps the essential vitamins and minerals as well as the blood in our body to get distributed better. In turn, this improves our immune system to help us avoid sickness. Vitamin E is also used for proper blood clotting as well as quicker healing of wounds. This is important in the case of accidents where excessive bleeding can cause serious problems.

Benefits for Women

Vitamin E has been shown in different research to be helpful in lessening or controlling premenstrual syndrome. Premenstrual syndrome is a condition that affects millions of women prior to their menstrual cycle. It manifests itself in the way of symptoms such as headaches, cramps, upset stomach, bloating, migraines, irritability and many other symptoms. Benefits of Vitamin E are also the help it gives in decreasing different kinds of breast diseases, promoting healthier looking skin and decreasing coronary artery disease.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it is stored in our liver until it is needed. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, which are lost when we urinate, fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin E can become toxic if there is too much in our system. Before you consider taking supplements of Vitamin E, consult with your doctor first because you may be getting plenty of vitamin E in the foods you’re eating. Some of the natural food sources for Vitamin E are vegetable oils, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, kiwi, whole grains, peanut butter, fish, leafy green vegetables, goat’s milk and fortified breakfast cereals. As you can see from the list, most of us get many of these sources each day.
